SEASON ENDS IN DISAPPOINTMENT IN CLOSE ENCOUNTER

The final game of the Bristol and District League Division 2 season saw Canford visit Frys. The home side were hoping for a good result to finish the season. After a close start, Canford took the advantage at the halfway point, thanks to rink 1 pulling away. Rinks 2 and 3 stayed close. Rink 2 lost out on the final end with Canford picking up the 2 shots required to take a 15-14 win. Rink 3 saw Frys pick up 3 in the final 2 ends to draw the rink, but Canford still held the overall advantage. A mistake on rink 1 gave Frys two shots with helped Frys on their way to closing the gap, with Canford struggling in the reduced light. The final end saw Frys needing 5 shots for the match and rink. Frys had the better end, but Frys skip narrowly missed Canford’s second bowl twice which would have given Frys enough to at least tie the game. Canford held on to a 39-43 win with only 1 point going to the home side, bringing to an end a somewhat disappointing and up and down season with a 9th placed finish. With there being no promotion or relegation, Frys retain their position in Division 2. Scores: Rink 1: 12-15; Rink 2: 14-15; Rink 3: 13-13; Frys 39-43 Canford (1-9).

Frys 2021 season record:

Played: 18; Won: 7; Drew: 0; Lost: 11; Shots For: 795; Shots Against: 822; Shots Difference: -27; Points: 72.

DISAPPOINTMENT AT KEYNSHAM

The penultimate game of the season saw Frys make the short trip to face Keynsham ‘A’. Keynsham took the early lead with rink pulling away. Frys were able to counter on rinks 2 and 3, but Keynsham were able to halt progress. Keynsham held the lead at the halfway point, but rink 2 had a poor second half which handed the game to Keynsham. Despite a comeback from rink 1, Keynsham ran out 48-31 winners taking 10 points on a disappointing night for the visitors. Scores: Rink 1: 10-15; Rink 2: 9-16; Rink 3: 12-17; Frys 31-48 Keynsham ‘A’ (0-10).

FRYS HAMMER STRUGGLING ARDAGH

A struggling Ardagh visited Frys having only picked up 2 points in the last 3 games falling behind in the title race. Frys took an early lead with rink 2 starting with two 5’s in their first 3 ends. After a tight start, rink 3 started pulling away extending Frys lead to an unassailable lead in the game and the rink. An average performance on rink 2 saw Ardagh pull back some of the shots. Frys held a 5 shot lead on the penultimate end. A poor end saw Ardagh hold 5 shots, but Frys skip got into the head picking up the shot saving the rink for Frys. Rink 1 had gone 20 shots up, but attacking play from Ardagh saw them close the gap to 7 with 2 ends left. Frys closed the rink out with 3 on the penultimate end. The 72-38 win with 10 points saw Frys jump to 8th in the table with 2 games left. Scores: Rink 1: 30-17; Rink 2: 18-13; Rink 3: 24-8; Frys 72-38 Ardagh (10-0).

CUP RUNS END

Bristol St Andrews made a rare trip to Frys in the City and County of Bristol Clarence Davey Plate. Bristol St Andrews took the advantage in the first half of the game, helped by rink 2 pulling away as Frys were unable to pick up shots. The other three rinks stayed relatively tight, keeping Frys in touching distance. After the halfway point, Frys started to pull away on rink 1 and rink 4 started pulling back the deficit they faced. A 5 on rink 3 closed the gap, but Bristol St Andrews replied the next end with a five. Some key shots for the visitors saw the game out as Frys fell to a 70-80 defeat, bringing to an end Frys brief cup runs. Scores: Rink 1: 25-10; Rink 2: 11-25; Rink 3: 18-25; Rink 4: 16-20; Frys 70-80 Bristol St Andrews.

DRAMATIC END IN THE RAIN

Begbrook Green ‘A’ were the hosts for Frys with both clubs in the bottom 3 of the table. A dark night soon turned to rain before trial ends even started. The short shower didn’t last too long and a close game ensued. Rink 1 pulled away for Frys, with Begbrook return the favour on rink 3. Rink 2 also saw Begbrook edge ahead. Frys quickly pulled rinks 2 and 3 back taking the lead at the halfway point. Heavy rain then fell as Begbrook pulled back rink 1 closing the game up dramatically. With the strength of the rain increasing, both sides exchanged shots, which saw Begbrook take a 3 shot lead after 34 ends. The 35th, 36th and 37th ends saw all Frys rinks combine for 4 shots, which proved to be crucial. With the rain still heavy and the green starting to take water, the captains then conferred opting to continue the game. On the next end, a home player slipped whilst playing his bowl, bringing the game to a suspension on safety grounds. With the minimum 30 ends completed and the rain showing little sign of stopping with enough time for the green to dry out, the result was declared, with Frys taking a dramatic 32-31 win with all rinks decided by a single shot with Frys taking 8 points from the shortened game. Scores: Rink 1: 10-9; Rink 2: 10-11; Rink 3: 12-11; Frys 32-31 Begbrook Green ‘A’ (8-2).

FRYS PULL AWAY LATE FOR 3 ALSOP SHIELDS IN A ROW

The 51st Alsop Shield between Frys and Keynsham returned Friday night after a year out, with Frys the current holders. Keynsham hosted the game and pulled out a lead in the early ends, but Frys stayed in touch with rink 1 pulling away. Just after halfway, Keynsham went 10 shots up on rink 2, but Frys then hit 12 shots in 7 ends to pull back the deficit. Rink 1 continued to pull away and with rinks 3 and 4 playing a tight game picking up useful shots and minimising Keynsham’s counts, it set up a tense finish in the final quarter. However, the game took a twist with rink 1 adding a further 10 shots in their last 6 ends. The other 3 rinks outscored Keynsham with their last 6 ends, seeing Frys pull comfortably away, wrapping up their 3rd Alsop Shield in a row and 6th of the last 8 with a score of 85-69. Scores: Rink 1: 27-9; Rink 2: 18-19; Rink 3: 16-12; Rink 4: 14-19; Frys 85-69 Keynsham.

COSTLY 14th COSTS FRYS

Frys looked to continue their good form with a visit from Bradley Stoke. Dark clouds and a heavy green made conditions different to recent weeks, and after a close start Frys edged away with help from rink 3 pulling away, but Bradley Stoke kept it tight with rink 1 pulling away after halfway. Rink 3 countered this and the game remained finely poised. The game turned on the 14th end on all rinks with Frys dropping a combined 8 shots which turned the game in favour of the visitors. Bradley Stoke would hold on to the lead and win 43-50 with rinks 2 and 3 picking up a useful 4 points for Frys. Scores: Rink 1: 6-25; Rink 2: 13-12; Rink 3: 24-13; Frys 43-50 Bradley Stoke (4-6).

3 IN A ROW BY 3

Avonvale ‘A’ hosted Frys with the home side 9 points clear in the table. The game would prove a tight affair, but Frys pulled out an early lead on rink 1. This would eventually be pegged back, but the halfway point saw Frys with a small lead. Three loose middle ends on rink 3 let Avonvale ‘A’ pull away on the rink and close the gap. However, rink 2 did pull away maintaining Frys lead. Rink 1 finished first, with Avonvale having grabbed a late 2 shot lead going into the final. Frys skip was able to convert the final end into 3 shots giving Frys the rink win. Rink 2 went to Frys and rink 3 looked to close the final 2 ends out holding an overall 6 shot lead. Having been able to keep the remaining ends tight, a saving draw from Frys skip for second shot left Avonvale needing 5 to draw on the final end. A fairly composed end cut out Avonvale’s options only picking up two shots as Frys won 50-47 making it 3 wins in row to close within 1 point of 8 placed Avonvale. Scores: Rink 1: 20-19; Rink 2: 21-11; Rink 3: 9-17; Frys 50-47 Avonvale ‘A’ (8-2).

POOR SECOND HALF COSTS FRYS

Purnells were the hosts as Frys visited in the first round of the Somerset Wedmore Plate. The first half of game on a quick green was closer than expected, the halfway lead very slightly with Purnells. The second half of the game was very different with rinks 1, 2 and 3 struggling to pick up shots. Rink 4 were able to come back to tie, but the poor second half proved costly for Frys as Purnells ran away to a 62-94 win. Scores: Rink 1: 15-25; Rink 2: 16-24; Rink 3: 14-27; Rink 4: 18-18; Frys 62-94 Purnells.

BRADLEY STOKE WIN IN CLARENCE

The City and County of Bristol Bowling Association Clarence Davey Cup started Monday night as Frys travelled to Bradley Stoke. Frys started poorly in rinks 1 and 3 and with rinks 2 and 4 not able to get clear enough ahead, it left Bradley Stoke in the lead. With rink 3 coming back, it kept Frys in touching distance, but mistakes on rink 2 cost Frys precious shots giving Bradley Stoke a bigger lead. Rink 3 were able to close to one shot, and rink 4 won by 6 shots, it was not enough to overcome the gap on rink 1 leaving rink 2 with far too much to do with Bradley Stoke closing the game out with a 64-86 win. Frys will now play in the Clarence Davey Plate with the first round scheduled for Wednesday 4th August. Scores: Rink 1: 12-32; Rink 2: 17-25; Rink 3: 17-18; Rink 4: 18-12; Frys 64-86 Bradley Stoke.

RECORDS TUMBLE AS FRYS REIGN OVER IMPERIAL

Imperial visited Frys as the home side looked for back-to-back wins for first time this season, but could not have imagined the game that would transpire. With the green slower than expected, a game plan of longer jacks worked against a team more used to the fast artificial surface at Imperial as rinks 2 and 3 pulled away to early leads. Rink 1 however was tight seeing both sides scoring only singles. A short burst of shots from Imperial on rink 3 did nothing as Frys soon found their groove again pulling away.

HOT SHOT FOR FRYS AT ARDAGH

Congratulations to the rink of Steve Buck, John Klopcic, Dave Shaw and Pat Slavin who picked up 8 shots in a single end in our friendly against Ardagh on Saturday 4th September in a comeback win by 69-63.

Next door on rink 2 a dominant performance saw them continue to pull away, leaving Frys looking at a huge total. After 13 straight singles for second time this season, Frys broke the streak with a 2 on the 14th end. Going into the final end, Frys held a 5 shot lead. Imperial could only score 3 shots leaving Frys with the rink 1. Imperial’s efforts were in vain as rinks 2 and 3 never let up, with Frys putting up 32-9 score on rink 3, and a remarkable game on rink 2 saw them score 40 shots and conceding only 3 as Frys ran away to a 83-19 win on a night which set season records across all 4 divisions with rink 2 getting the highest rink score, biggest winning margin and equalled the lowest shots conceded set by Frys last week; highest team total, lowest shots conceded by a team this season and biggest margin of victory. The 10 points from a remarkable night lifted Frys to 9th in the table. Scores: Rink 1: 11-9; Rink 2: 40-3; Rink 3: 32-7; Frys 83-19 Imperial (8-2).

DRAMATIC END TO TRIPLES DAY

Frys held their Triples Day competition after missing the 2020 competition. The format saw 6 teams playing each other once in games of 6 ends, with points awarded for each end won and for winning the games. Light rain continued through the morning session in which the teams of Steve Buck, Vernon Hopkins, Ken Stewart and Stephen Day, Jeff Budd, Tricia Shaw established themselves as front runners with comfortable wins in their first two games. This set up what could have been a pivotal game just before lunch with the two teams meeting. Steve Buck’s rink came away 4 shot winners giving them the lunchtime lead. A one-shot win in their fourth game saw them hold a 6-point lead and a favourable draw playing the 6th placed team saw them as favourites going into the final game.

The battle for second place saw Stephen Day’s rink on 33 points meeting the rink of Christopher Day, Peter Fiedor and Pat Slavin who sat in third after a steady day on 31 points. Christopher Day’s rink opened the final game with 5 shots on the first end, putting themselves in the driving seat. On the rink next door, Steve Buck’s rink found themselves in trouble falling behind early. With Steve Buck’s rink unable to pull back the deficit, it left the winner of the other game with a real chance at taking the title. Depsite the early setback, Stephen Day’s rink set about a nervy comeback, successfully scoring 9 unanswered shots in the remaining 5 ends taking 11 of the 12 points on offer. With the Steve Buck, Vernon Hopkins and Ken Stewart rink only scoring 2 points, it left Stephen Day, Jeff Budd and Tricia Shaw all taking their first triples title with 45 points, with Jeff and Tricia winning their first ever title.

RINK 2 CONCEDE 3 AS FRYS SNAP LOSING STREAK

Third placed Henleaze ‘A’ were the visitors to Somerdale with Frys looking to snap their 5-game losing streak. After a close start, rink 3 fell behind, but with rink 2 on good form and rink 1 holding tight, Frys were able to hold the lead. Rink 3 closed the deficit, but rink 1 started to fall behind. Rink 2 continued their dominant form to keep Frys ahead, and as Henleaze tired, started to rack up counts, only conceding 3 shots whilst scoring 28 of their own. This would prove enough for Frys to wrap up the game with an end to spare taking 6 points from the 50-36 win. Scores: Rink 1: 13-17; Rink 2: 28-3; Rink 3: 13-17; Frys 50-36 Henleaze ‘A’ (6-4).

TOUGH NIGHT IN TURNBULL CUP

Frys faced a tough start in the Somerset County Bowls Association Turnbull Cup with a trip to Bath. A heavy shower before the game did little to make a difference as Bath soon took a lead on rink 1. It wasn’t long before Bath were able to pull a lead on all rinks leaving Frys on the back foot. Quality bowls from Bath enabled them to pull clear, with the only real resistance coming from rink 3, but just lacked that final execution to get the shots to keep the score closer. With the other 3 rinks all dropping 30+ shots, Bath ran out easy winners 47-128. Frys are scheduled to play either Frome Park or Chew Stoke in the Wedmore Plate on Tuesday 27th July. Scores: Rink 1: 16-31; Rink 2: 12-37; Rink 3: 14-24; Rink 4: 5-36; Frys 47-128 Bath.

FRYS CONCEDE 60 FOR SECOND CONSECITIVE WEEK

Frys started the second half of the league season with a trip to Long Ashton. Rink 1 got a small lead in the opening ends, but this was soon overturned as Long Ashton pulled away. The story was much the same on the other rinks, with Frys playing better than previous weeks, but not quite good enough to get the shots needed. In the middle ends, rink 3 started a comeback and got to within one shot of Long Ashton, but a couple of loose ends saw Long Ashton pull away again, leaving Long Ashton to a 67-33 win with 0 points for the visitors. Scores: Rink 1: 11-25; Rink 2: 7-21; Rink 3: 15-21; Frys 33-67 Long Ashton (0-10).

FRYS END 1st HALF WITH 7th LOSS

The first half of the league season came to end Thursday as last placed Frys travelled to 9th place Canford. The game started well for the home side with rink 1 taking a good lead early. This put Frys on the back foot, but rinks 2 and 3 were close, with rink 2 able to take a lead. With rink 1 still dominated by the home team at the halfway point, Frys chances of winning the game took a blow when a mistake from Frys skip on rink 2 helped Canford to 7 shots, wiping out their lead. Meanwhile rink 3 fell behind with Canford stringing together a number of ends to take a lead that Frys would not take back. Rink 2 were able to hold on taking the rink giving Frys 2 points in a high scoring 41-65 defeat to remain bottom of the table on 25 points at halfway. Scores: Rink 1: 8-30; Rink 2: 18-16; Rink 3: 15-19; Frys 41-65 Canford (2-8).

POOR SECOND HALF COSTS FRYS

Frys welcomed Keynsham 'A' in the first local derby of year Thursday night. With conditions cooler than previous days, the game started close on all rinks with neither team gaining the upper hand. That changed after halfway as Keynsham pulled away on rink 3, giving them the advantage. With rinks 1 and 2 still close Frys stayed in the game. However rink 1 were dropping shots to Keynsham and a late 4 for the visitors left Frys with too much to do to rescue the rink. Rink 2 were able to close the game out giving Frys 2 points on a night that they will feel could have been better. Scores: Rink 1: 9-17; Rink 2: 15-11; Rink 3: 6-19; Frys 30-47 Keynsham 'A' (2-8).

FRYS OUT OF LLOYD TROPHY

The 1st round of the Bristol and District League Lloyd Trophy was held last Tuesday with the Frys making the trip to Division 1 side Weston Bath. It didn't take long for Weston Bath to take control of the game with rinks 1 and 2 soon pulling away from Frys. Frys skip on rink 2 saved multiple shots to keep the score respectable, but was not enough to stop the scoring for the home side. Rink 3 was the only rink which offered some resistance, but lost ground in the middle ends. Rink 3 were able to make a late comeback eventually winning the rink on the final end, but this was not enough to overturn the overall deficit and Weston Bath took their place in the second round. Scores: Rink 1: 9-19; Rink 2: 6-24; Rink 3: 17-15; Frys 32-58.

FRYS SUFFER 5TH DEFEAT

Frys travelled to 2nd place Ardagh in the latest game in the Bristol and District League. Rinks 2 and 3 got off to tight starts with good bowling, but rink 1 was a different story with the home side playing the better on a rink which saw both teams not finding consistency, pulling out a lead. Frys were able to close within 2 shots, however a poor end saw Ardagh steadily increase the lead again. With the other two rinks tight, it would be too much for Frys to overcome with Ardagh also taking rink 2. Frys were able to pick up 2 points from rink 3 who came out on top in a close encounter. Scores: Rink 1: 8-19; Rink 2: 11-15; Rink 3: 14-12; Frys 33-46 Ardagh (2-8).

FRYS SNAP 4 GAME LOSING STREAK

After a run of 4 straight defeats, Frys welcomed Begbrook Green 'A' to a sunny Somerdale and got the better start on rinks 1 and 3. In contrast, rink 2 went the the way of the home team gradually pulling out a lead to help keep the game tight. Despite the early deficits on rinks 1 and 3, both rinks set about closing the gaps, which would eventually give the Frys the overall lead. Rink 2 was a formality for the home side setting up the win for Frys, leaving rinks 1 and 3 to battle for the 2 points on each rink. Rink 3 were able to grab a late lead and held on to take the points. However rink 1 would be a different story after Frys took the lead, a loose 16th and 17th end allowed Begbrook Green to take the points with the skip drawing in a second shot and Frys skip missing with a poor bowl gave Begbrook Green a 1 shot rink win. Frys were the winners on the night with 8 points from the 54-40 win but remain bottom of the table. Scores: Rink 1: 16-17; Rink 2: 23-12; Rink 3: 15-11; Frys 54-40 Begbrook Green 'A' (8-2).

FRYS RESCUE POINT FROM FOURTH STRAIGHT LOSS

Frys looked to halt their losing streak during their trip to Bradley Stoke. It was the home taking the early advantage with rink 3 taking a commanding lead putting the visitors under pressure. Frys overcame an early deficit on rink 1 taking a lead past halfway, but with rink 2 not quite able to get shots, only minimising the counts for Bradley Stoke, it gave them command of the game. With Bradley Stoke taking rink 3 comfortably, it was left to rinks 1 and 2 to find valuable points for Frys. Rink 1 looked the likely rink to score for Frys, but a late comback aided by a fluky shot from the Bradley Stoke skip on the penultimate end left Frys 2 back and only picked up 1 on the final end. Rink 2 looked like going to Bradley Stoke with an 8 shot lead with 3 ends left. However Frys had other ideas closing the gap to 3 after some good bowls for the final end. A loose start to the end left Frys in difficult position. A fortunate wick from Frys 3 gave them shot, with the skip adding a second and a lose bowl from Bradley Stoke's skip knocked a third Frys bowl into the count. Frys skip just missed adding a fourth, leaving Bradley Stoke's skip with one bowl left. A close effort sneaked through the gap after some contact with Frys bowls to finish just outside the count giving Frys the 3 shots needed to rescue a point from the 39-50 defeat remaining bottom of the table. Scores: Rink 1: 15-16; Rink 2: 14-14; Rink 3: 10-20; Frys 39-50 Bradley Stoke (1-9).

FRYS LOSE 3 IN A ROW

Avonvale 'A' travelled to a damp and windy Somerdale in the fourth game of the season. An even start didn't last with as Avonvale soon took command of the game, with Rink 1 dominiating Frys. Frys struggled to find consistency in the tricky conditions and rinks 2 and 3 only able to keep in touch with Avonvale, thanks to the skip on rink 3 saving a number of shots. However it would not be enough, with Avonvale taking a comfortable win 52-35 and with Frys unable to gain any points in the final ends on rinks 2 and 3 capping off a difficult night leaving Frys bottom of the table. Scores: Rink 1: 9-23; Rink 2: 13-14; Rink 3: 13-15; Frys 35-52 Avonvale 'A' (0-10).

LATE COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AT IMPERIAL

The third game of the league season saw Frys travel to South Bristol Sports Centre to take on Imperial on the artifical surface. Earlier rain left the surface damp and under gloomy skies, the game started out close, before Imperial were able to pull away on rinks 1 and 2. Approaching the halfway point, Imperial had a commanding lead which they were able to keep extending, despite some good bowls from Frys to minimise the negative counts. Meanwhile rink 3 had remained close until the halfway point from then Frys dominated the rink, surviving some close misses from Imperial, , but was not enough to overturn the deficit. The game was to take a dramatic turn in the closing stages, when a strong 15th end from rink 3 saw Frys sense an oppertunity to stay in the game. The 5 shots on the 15th was the start of 11 shots in the final 3 ends from rink 3, with Imperial's skip saving 2 shots on the final end. This late flurry saw Frys back in the game and with rinks 1 and 2 picking up valuable shots in their closing ends. This left Imperial only 2 shots up with one end to finish on rink 2. A loose end from Frys left them chasing with Frys skip narrowly missing the jack with his first bowl, and the final bowl too tight, left Frys 3 shots behind with only 2 points from the 46-49 defeat dropping them to 9th in the table. Scores: Rink 1: 10-20; Rink 2: 10-22; Rink 3: 7-26; Frys 46-49 Imperial (2-8).

FRYS DROP 10 AT LEADERS HENLEAZE

Second place Frys travelled to first place Henleaze 'A' in the second match of the Bristol and District League. A close start saw the first 6 ends of the match scoring singles, but Henleaze soon took a lead with rink 1 going up by 9, and Frys conceding a 7 for the second consecutive week on rink 2 gave Henleaze a comfortable lead. With rink 3 close, rink 1 set about closing their deficit and eventually pulling level. Henleaze were able to hold the lead on rink 2 as the closing ends approached. Frys were unable to generate much momentum to pull the game back, with Henleaze taking rink 2 comfortably and holding out on rink 3, it left rink 1 with too much to do. Conceding 6 shots on the penultimate end ended any hopes Frys had of taking any points, falling to a 56-35 defeat. Scores: Rink 1: 13-23; Rink 2: 12-19; Rink 3: 10-14; Frys 35-56 Henleaze 'A' (0-10).

FRYS PICK UP WIN IN FIRST GAME SINCE PANDEMIC

Frys welcomed Long Ashton to Somerdale in the Bristol and District Bowls League in their first game since 2019. The game started well for Frys with rink 3 quickly taking an 8 shot lead. Rinks 1 and 2 had a tighter start, with a mistake from Long Ashton's skip on rink 1, knocking up a Frys bowl cut a big count down and allowing Frys to then pull away. Rink 3 continued to pull away setting Frys up for the game, with rink 2 trading singles, and rink 1 holding tight, despite Long Ashton closing the deficit. With rink 3 picking up a comfortable win, the game looked secure, Long Ashton had other ideas, breaking the 13 end streak of singles on rink 2 over the next ends, including a 7, cutting Frys advantage. Frys were able to hold off any late charge Long Ashton hoped to make, holding out for an 11 shot win, taking 8 points from the game to sit 2nd in table, setting up a top of the table clash with Henleaze 'A' next week. Scores: Rink 1: 17-13; Rink 2: 8-19; Rink 3: 24-6; Frys 49-38 Henleaze 'A' (8-2).

CLUB STATEMENT - RETURN TO PLAY

Bowls England have recently released their Return to Play document which allows bowls to be played safely during the coronavirus pandemic. Step 1 commenced on March 29th. As the club season does not start until 17th April, we are expecting to be under Step 2. At all steps, matches against other clubs are permitted, which will hopefully include friendlies and Bristol and District League. There is a limit to 24 players on the green at any time. For new players, we are able to offer 1:1 coaching.

The club will provide a further update closer to the start of the season.
