IMPERIAL REIGN IN BACK AND FORTH ENCOUNTER

A windy but sunny night was the setting for the third game of the Bristol and District League as Frys travelled to Imperial. A slow start for Frys on rink 3 was countered by rinks 1 and 2, but Imperial slow crept their way into the game taking the lead. Rink 3 started to slow claw their way back into into the game, and were able to remain in touching distance, giving Frys the overall lead. As the game neared the conclusion, Imperial started to comeback on rink 1, and with rink 3 doing what they needed to do to keep Frys at bay, Imperial took the lead again. Rink were unable to pick up the required 4 shots on the last end, leaving Frys 2 points from the 41-46 defeat and 9th in the table. Scores: Rink 1: 12-16; Rink 2: 16-9; Rink 3: 13-21; Frys 41-46 Imperial (2-8).

POINTLESS NIGHT AT HENLEAZE

A difficult night for Frys at Henleaze 'A' saw them go pointless for the first time this season. A poor start set the tone as Henleaze pulled away on all rinks. Rink 1 were able to get back in touching distance, but let the position slip badly. The deficits were too much for Frys to overcome slipping to a poor 27-70 defeat. Scores: Rink 1: 10-26; Rink 2: 8-20; Rink 3: 9-24; Frys 27-70 Henleaze 'A' (0-10).

OPENING NIGHT COMEBACK FOR FRYS

The Bristol and District Bowls League season commenced Thursday night. Frys were looking to improve on last seasons 9th place finish with a opening night win. Long Ashton were the visitors, and thanks to rink 2 holding Frys scoreless through the first half of the game, it was the visitors who held the advantage passed the halfway point. The Frys were then able to start pulling shots back on rink 2 and rink 1 started pulling away, closing the game up heading in to the final ends. A crazy sequence of ends for rink 2 saw both teams exchange sizeable counts leaving the game in the balance. Rink 1 were able to pull further away, which helped Frys to a 5 shot lead with Rink 3 still to finish. Long Ashton had pulled the rink to within one heading into the last end. Long Ashton held on to their early shot which saw the rink tied, but could not stop Frys taking a 55-51 win with 7 points to leave them 3rd in the early table. Scores: Rink 1: 23-11; Rink 2: 16-24; Rink 3: 16-16; Frys 55-51 Long Ashton (7-3).

FRYS CHAMPIONS AFTER DRAMATIC FINALE - BRISTOL ST ANDREWS FLOODLIT LEAGUE ROUND-UP

Frys had a successful end to the season, picking up their first title in 10 years by winning the Bristol St Andrew's Floodlit League Division 3 title after a thrilling finale. The format for the was 6 teams of 2 rinks, with all teams playing on the same night. A total of 6 points were on offer in each game; 2 points for winning a rink and a further 2 for the overall win. The open competition allowed players who don't got the chance, the opportunity to get some competitive bowls.

Frys opened the campaign with a game against Bristol Arrow. A strong performance on rink 1 set up a comfortable win Frys, with rink 2 also able to take their win giving Frys a 48-18 win with all 6 points leaving Frys top on shots difference from Yate and SLAT, who had also set out their title credentials with 6-0 wins.

The second game was against Yate. A close first half then went in favour of Yate with rink 2 pulling away to set up the 35-25 win for Yate. Rink 1 were able to keep things tight, thanks to some big saves from Frys skip early on, with the rink coming down to last end, with Frys picking up the required shots to come away with a single point.

SLAT were the opponents in game 3 in what turned out be a high quality encounter. Both teams had a rink pull out to a lead, but after the halfway point, both teams pulled the rinks back leaving both rinks and the game in the balance. Rink 1 pulled out a 17-16 win, leaving Frys 2 up with rink 2 1 shot up with one end left. After falling behind in the end, Frys were able to get back into the end, restricting the SLAT skip to a draw for the final shot, leaving Frys 36-35 winners with 5 points, drawing Frys level with SLAT in the table on 12 points, but remaining ahead on shots difference. 6 points for Yate saw them take a 5 point lead with 2 games left.

Game four against Bristol Greenbank started in poor conditions, which only got worse as the night went on, leading to the round being abandoned and with not enough ends completed to constitute a match, all 6 teams were awarded 3 points.

The final round of games saw Yate at the top of the table, 5 points ahead of Frys and SLAT with a superior shots difference to both. Frys and SLAT were level on 15 points, with Frys 10 shots ahead. Frys met Begbrook Green in their game, with Yate and SLAT meeting on the 2 rinks next door. 2 points from Yate would see them take the title. Frys had a slow start with Begbrook taking the early lead. Meanwhile SLAT set about making their charge on the title taking the lead on both rinks. Frys rink 2 started to get back into the game, eventually taking a comfortable lead. Rink 1 gradually got themselves back into the game, but some big counts dropped left them with some work to do. Next door, SLAT were taking an easy victory on rink 1, but with rink 2 having conceded a 6, Yate were very much back in the hunt, eventually taking a 3 shot lead on the rink with 2 ends left. A thrilling last couple of ends played out with Frys taking the lead on rink 1 leaving Frys sitting on the 6 points required for the title. Back on rink 2 in the SLAT v Yate game, SLAT picked up 2 shots on the penultimate end, and held 2 shots with Yate's skip having the last bowl, needing to grab the shot to win the league. A running bowl from Yate's skip went through the gap between SLAT's second shot and the jack, giving SLAT a 6 point win. With Frys comfortably up on shots and rink 1 6 shots up in their final end, a single shot and a 43-26 win confirmed that the Division 3 title would be coming to Somerdale, finishing on 21 points and 18 shots ahead of SLAT and earning promotion into the 2nd division in 2023.

DRAMATIC END TO THE SEASON

The Bristol and District Bowls League season came to a dramatic conclusion on Thursday night. Frys entered the final game level on points with Ardagh, but sitting ahead in fourth by 2 shots on shots difference. Begbrook Green 'A' were the visitor who sat in the relegation zone in 9th, needing at least 3 points to have a chance to survival. A bright start saw the visitors take the early lead with rinks 2 and 3 pulling ahead. Frys had the better start on rink 1, but this was not enough as Begbrook would hold a small lead at the halfway point. As the light faded and the green slowed up, Frys started to pull back on rinks 2 and 3, but rink 1 saw Begbrook edge their way back into the game, leaving the game firmly in the balance. Rink finished first, with Frys having got the score back to 16-16 with one end left. Frys number 3 drew shot with his second bowl which would stay shot, with Frys skip finding a way in to lie second shot seeing Frys take the two points. Rink 3 would finish next, with Frys having pulled their score back to 14-14 with 2 shots on the penultimate end. After Frys lead drew shot, the shot would then change hands several times, before Frys number three knocked his first bowl in for shot. The head didn't change seeing Frys take another two points. Rink 1 held off the late charge picking up 3 shots on the penultimate end sealing the game for Frys. Begbrook then elected not to play the final end, which confirmed a 52-42 shot win for Frys taking all 10 points.

The drama didn't end there. With Canford and Begbrook 'A''s relegation confirmed, Imperial would pick up 4 points against Keynsham 'A', with one rink winning by a single shot. With Avonvale 'A' not picking up any points against Ardagh, with one rink losing by a single shot, Avonvale 'A' would fall into division 3. The 54-42 win for Ardagh and with Henleaze 'A' not scoring any points against Long Ashton in a promotion decider, it would leave Henleaze 'A', Frys

and Ardagh tied on 96 points. Henleaze 'A' would finish 3rd on shots difference. Frys and Ardagh finished with a shots difference of 32, with Frys finish 4th having won 10 games to Ardagh's 9.

That brought to an end a competitive season and an improved performance from Frys. Scores: Rink 1: 19-12; Rink 2: 18-16; Rink 3: 15-14; Frys 52-42 Begbrook 'A' (10-0).

Frys season record: Games: 18; Won: 10; Lost: 8; Shots For: 857; Shots Against: 825; Shots diff: 32; Points: 96.

PROMOTION HOPES END AT KEYNSHAM

Frys made the short trip to Keynsham 'A' in a crucial penultimate game. Keynsham got the best of the early ends, but rink would help keep Frys in the game. Keynsham held the lead at the halfway point, but Frys had been able to keep in touch, with rinks 2 and 3 mostly keeping Keynsham's counts down, and would start to close the gap. A few strong ends saw Frys eventually take the lead. Rink 3 went to Keynsham and with Frys taking rink 1, it left rink 2 with a 2 shot lead with 2 ends left. Keynsham got a small break as a good connection from Frys ended up giving Keynsham three shots and a 1 shot lead. Keynsham held the shots on the final end, and with Frys skip missing the trail for 2, Keynsham would take the 41-38 shot win and 8 points ending Frys promotion hopes. The 2 points should see Frys remain in Division 2. Scores: Rink 1: 18-10; Rink 2: 10-18; Rink 3: 10-13; Frys 38-41 Keynsham 'A'.

FRYS MISS OUT ON FINAL

The semi-final of the Somerset Wedmore Plate took place last Sunday at Bloomfield which saw Frys take on Congresbury. The hot weather reduced the game to 15 ends from the scheduled 21. FRYS FALL BACK TO ARDAGH

Ardagh visited Frys in the league in what would be a disappointing night for the home side. Ardagh started the betterwith rink 3 pulling away through the middle ends. Frys took the lead on rink 1, with rink 2 settling into a tight contest. Ardagh held the lead at halfway, which prove too much for Frys to overcome. With rink 1 dropping 15 shots in 6 ends giving up a promising position, and rink also falling behind in the closing ends, it would be Ardagh taking all 10 points from the 37-59 win, leaving Frys falling behind in the push for promotion. Scores: Rink 1: 16-21; Rink 2: 12-17; Rink 3: 9-21   Frys 37-59 Ardagh (0-10).

Rink 4 saw Keynsham pull away, but this left Frys 4 shots back with one end left. Keynsham left Frys a difficult shot which was not achieved seeing Keynsham take the Alsop Shield 73-78. Scores: Rink 1: 28-22; Rink 2: 12-19; Rink 3: 19-14; Rink 4: 14-23; Frys 73-78 Keynsham.

FRYS SURVIVE LATE COMEBACK AT CANFORD

Canford hosted Frys on a sunny Thursday evening which saw Frys jump ahead early on all rink 1 and 2, with a tight start on rink 3 soon broken by the visitors. Frys held a comfortable lead at the halfway point, but Canford would mount a comeback on rinks 1 and 3. Rink 2 continued their good form with some good shots ensuring Frys would take the overall win. Rink 1 only picked up 1 shot from the final 9 ends, but were able to minimise counts to stop Canford making overall progress. Meanwhile rink 3 took a 6 shot lead with 3 ends left, but Canford reduced that to 2 with one end left. A poor end left Frys in trouble, but with Frys final bowl just failing to move Canford's second bowl enoughbut staying in the head, the rink was shared with Frys taking 7 point from the 52-43 win. Scores: Rink 1: 11-17; Rink 2: 23-8; Rink 3: 18-18; Frys 52-43 Canford.

BIG WIN FOR CONGRESBURY

Last Friday night Frys welcomed Congresbury in the City and County of Bristol Clarence Davey Plate semi-final. Congresbury got the early jump, but Frys managed to stay in touch towards halfway. Despite Frys playing well on rink 2, Congresbury's skip played a supurb game keeping Frys off the board. After the halfway point, Congresbury pulled away on rinks 3 and 4, and rink 2 continued their good form taking the game away from Frys. Rink 1 saw Frys pull back an ealry deficit, but it was too much to overcome, with Frys just missing out on winning the rink by 2 shots, with an overall score of 57-95 seeing Congresbury advance to the final. WEDMORE SUCCESS FOR FRYS AFTER LAST MINUTE TWIST

Last Tuesday Frys made a rare trip to Frome Park in the Somerset County Bowling Association Wedmore Plate last 16. The game started off close with Frys getting the early lead on rinks 1 and 4, with Frome Park taking the advantage on rinks 2 and 3. Approaching the halfway point, Frome Park closed the gap on rink 1, with Frys doing the same on rink rink 2, leaving the game close at the halfway point. Frys continued to pull away steadily on rink 4, but a sudden turn on rink 1 with the score at 8-8 would see Frys pull away. With both teams making good shots, Frome Park would pull away on rink 2. Rink 3 struggled to get going, but were able to minimise the counts keeping Frys in the game. Rink 4 held for an 8 shot win, and well judged shot from the skip on rink saw Frys turn 2 shots down to 2 shots up, seeing them win the last 9 ends. Rink 3 had completed the extra end, with that going to Frome Park, with rink 2 having one end to complete, beliving that Frys were 1 shot behind, needing 2 off the final end. With Frome Park holding 2 shots and both skips with one bowl left, the game took a dramatic twist. A scoring error had awarded the 4 shots Frome Park scored on the extra end, but with these not being taken into account until the final end is completed, it handed Frys a 3 shot lead. With Frome Park's skip falling short on his last bowl, Frys skip played an insurance shot taking out any chance of a measure to see Frys home 65-63 in a competitive encounter. Frys will now play Alexandra or Frome Selwood on Tuesday 9th August. Scores: Rink 1: 24-8; Rink 2:15-25; Rink 3: 8-20; Rink 4: 18-10; Frys 65-63 Frome Park.

Rink 1 remained close with the scores level on the final end. Avonvale survived a scare when their skip trailed the jack away from a strong position into an area full of Frys bowls. Avonvale's bowl stayed with the jack, and with Frys skip going through the gap between the jack and shot bowl, Avonvale took 10 points from the 57-39 scoreline. 2022 TRIPLES DAY

The annual Fry's Bowling Club triples competition was held on Saturday 16th July. 8 teams were competing in a round robin format and with matches lasting only 5 ends, there were a lot of close scores throughout the day. Going into the lunch break the teams of D.Shaw and J.Day were unbeaten with 4 wins each and only separated by the number of ends won. The key game came during the 6th round of matches with the unbeaten teams going head to head in what looked like it would be the decider. FRYS BACK IN PROMOTION HUNT

Frys looked to continue from last week's win welcoming Henleaze 'A' to a warm Somerdale. Henleaze won comfortably early in the season, and it would be Henleaze starting the stronger. Frys were able to keep Henleaze in sight, but it was still the vistor's advantage at the halfway point. The game turned as Frys would edge ahead in the second half, with the lead remaining small. As the game neared the conclusion, Frys came alive putting in some good endsto se them home. FRYS END LOSING STREAK

The second half of the league season saw 9th placed Frys travelled to leaders Long Ashton. Early rain soon relented and Long Ashton took the early advantage with rinks 2 and 3 pulling ahead. Rink 1 headed the way of Frys and with rink 3 finding their way back into the game, the halfway point saw the game close up. The rain returned and set in for the rest night, and close back and forth game ensued. Rink 2 clawed back some of the shots lost early in the game and with Rink 1 going to Frys, they left the game level with Rink 3 having 2 ends to finish with Frys holding a 2 shot lead. 3 shots on the penultimate end gave Frys a 5 shot lead heading into the final end. Frys had couple of bowls in the head, but Long Ashton were also close and had enough bowls waiting, with 2 shots in front the jack. With the first bowl, Frys skip split the 2 Long Ashton bowls away and stayed in the head to hold shot. Long Ashton's skip just clipped the jack closer to the Frys bowl. The penultimate saw Frys skip complete a composed draw in front of jack leaving Long Ashton a difficult shot. Long Ashton's skip missed the head leaving Frys the 2 shots seeing them home 47-40 with 8 point  ending a run of four straight defeats, jumping to 7th with Long Ashton falling to third. Scores: Rink 1: 13-14; Rink 2: 8-24; Rink 3: 14-14; Frys 35-52 St Anne's Park

CONFUSION AS FRYS MISS OUT ON EXTRA END

Frys opening game in the City and County of Bristol Bowling Association saw Frys travel to Ardagh. The game was balanced with clubs having rinks pull out to a lead. Frys were edging ahead, but a late Ardagh come back on rink 3 setup a confusing turn of events. Ardagh picked up 2 on final end, which Frys thought they had done enough. Sometime later, it was agreed the game was in fact tied, meaning the teams had to reset and go back onto the green. The extra end saw Ardagh pick up 5 shots on rink 3, which saw Ardagh win by 3 shots as Frys were unable to overcome the 5 shots. Frys now go into the Plate competition. Scores: Rink 1: 29-11; Rink 2: 16-25; Rink 3: 23-20; Rink 4: 16-25; Frys 81-84 Ardagh.

LACK LUSTURE FRYS LOSE GROUND AT BEGBROOK

Frys ended the first half of the Bristol and District League season in the relegation zone after a lack lusture night at Begbrook Green 'A'. A tight start soon went the way of the home team with all rinks leaving Frys behind. Rink 1 were able to overturn the deficit, however rink 2 never got going. Frys stayed in touch until the halfway point when some loose ends let Begbrook get away. The only bright spark was rink 1 who were able to get a lead, only for Begbrook to come back and got the necessary two shots to draw the rink. Rink 3 were fortunate to have a shot at winning the rink, but couldn't quite get the 4 shots for the tie on the final end. Neither team got much advantage early with both teams putting in the shots to keep the score tight. The game turned in favour of the visitors as rink 2 failed to score in the final seven ends. Rink 1 and 3 remained tight close, with Frys getting a good bounce on rink 1 to finish level, and Keynsham's skip adding a tight second shot to draw the rink, leaving Frys with only 2 points from the 39-49 defeat, seeing them drop to 7th in a tight division. Scores: Rink 1: 16-16; Rink 2: 10-20; Rink 3: 13-13; Frys 39-49 Keynsham (2-8).

DISAPPOINTMENT AT ARDAGH

Frys grabbed early leads on rinks 1 and 2, but Ardagh fought their way back into the game leaving Frys to play from behind. As the rain countinued to fall, rink 1 would fall behind, helping Ardagh to the win. Rink 2 was much tighter, coming down the final end with scores tied. Frys third was able to drawn shot on the jack, and with Ardagh unable to take it off, Frys took 2 points from the 54-33 loss. BANK HOLIDAY JOY FOR FRYS
